Mapping the Person
In a world that constantly demands our attention, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Often, we find ourselves focused on only one or two aspects of life like work or health, or perhaps family or financial stability. But what if you could step back and see the entire picture, viewing each part of your life as interconnected pieces of a larger, more meaningful puzzle? After all, the famous quote, “the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts” exists to remind us that viewing things in part does not compare to understanding the it as a whole; where it’s value is significantly more than if you were to appraise each segment.
This approach, inspired by principles in Individual Psychology, explores the idea of Holism—seeing the whole person rather than just isolated parts. To truly know yourself and create lasting change, it’s essential to view yourself as a complete, integrated being, with each area of life influencing the others.
The Dimensions of Wellbeing
In paradigm coaching, I begin by building a map of each person. Mapping the whole self involves reflecting on various areas, each carrying a unique influence on our overall wellbeing. Consider these categories:
Physical Wellbeing – How you care for your body impacts everything from your mental clarity to your energy for daily tasks.
Emotional Wellbeing – Emotional health isn’t just about being happy; it’s about resilience, awareness, and understanding how feelings guide decisions.
Vocation and Purpose – Work is often seen as a job, but aligning it with your purpose transforms how fulfilling it feels.
Provision and Competence – I also like to use the word “esteem” in place of competence. Your sense of stability and skill development contribute significantly to self-esteem and drive.
Spirituality and Community – Feeling connected to something larger than yourself, and to others, shapes the meaning you derive from everyday experiences and gives you a waypoint to continue growing towards.
When these areas are in harmony, life feels aligned. But when even one area is neglected, it can ripple outward, creating imbalance elsewhere.
Building Your Awareness
Each of us has a unique “map” of these dimensions. For some, their map may reveal a strong sense of purpose but a lack of community. For others, there may be stability in health and provision, but a void in vocation or spirituality. This process isn’t about judgment; it’s about observation and understanding.
Imagine you could visualize your own map. Where would your strengths and gaps show up? Which areas feel aligned, and which need nurturing? This awareness often provides the first “a-ha” moment on the transformation of lasting change.
One Layer at a Time
I like to say, “Do it slow and, if you have to, do it ugly.” Achieving alignment across all areas of life isn’t instant; it’s a process that begins with recognizing each area as valuable and interconnected. By working through these layers, you begin to build a life that’s balanced and intentional.
Are you curious about how your own map might look? Or maybe there’s a part of you that senses where some of the gaps are but doesn’t quite know how to start filling them. Imagine the difference it could make if you understood not just what to change but how each area could harmonize to make every part of your life feel more purposeful and aligned.
